Centriphone an iPhone video experiment by Nicolas Vuignier

Centriphone is a video experiment undertaken by Swiss Freeskier Nicolas Vuignier. Always seeking for new and compelling ways to capture his action, this creative athlete spent weeks developing and testing a custom made rig to take advantage of the underrated video capabilities of his smartphone. Nicolas is driven by the belief that an original idea combined with simple equipment can deliver stunning visual effects. The result is a mind blowing and hypnotic short film where Nicolas floats in the powder as if time was distorted.

Fact Sheet:

A custom made 3d printed rig was used to achieve this effect

It took 6 prototypes to make it work

Wide angle lens used: Olloclip (offered by olloclip)

Iphone version: iPhone 6 – 64gb – spacegrey (offered by Swisscom)

Shot using the Apple camera app @ 240fps

Slowed down to 10%

First tests done with a GoPro during winter 2013-2014 but 120 fps was not enough

iPhone shape is actually more aerodynamic than the gopro

The biggest challenge was to make the phone stable when skiing at reasonable speed. The turbulent wind caused by the forward motion of the skier made the phone spin uncontrollably

No iphones were broken in the making of this video (it’s still functioning perfectly)
